Investor, entrepreneur, attorney, and environmentalist Peter Crane is scheduled to be taken off life support this afternoon, on April 23rd. He is survived by his mother, Basia.

Friends describe Crane as a vivacious spirit who “was always unapologetically himself.”

“Peter Crane dedicated the latter part of his life to preventing catastrophic climate change through his organization, Planet Positive, through his investments and advisory roles in companies,” Bryan Talebi, CEO & Cofounder of Ahura AI, said. “He was passionate about impact-driven organizations whose core missions are aligned with the improvement in the human condition. He lived life to the fullest. He had a vivacious spirit who was unapologetically himself. He was a loyal friend and an amazing human being.”

After graduating from the University of San Fransisco with a law degree, Crane served as a founder and advisor to numerous blockchain companies, successfully becoming one of the leaders in expanding the industry. Crane chose to work with companies benefitting the public at large. From participating in blockchain to reduce carbon emissions to working with groups to provide online privacy, better infrastructure, and health and wellness.

Crane’s latest venture with Planet Positive Ventures was a passion project for a man that truly believed in meshing technology and investment with sustainability in order for a better future. According to his bio, he “co-founded Planet Positive to activate his unwavering dedication to facilitating scalable climate solutions.”

Peter Crane

“When I first met Peter, I could see his incredible energy and lust for life,” Stewart Rogers, Managing Editor at Grit Daily, and Partner at Planet Positive, said. “We originally met at an after-party I was running at Web Summit, where I invited him to sing his favorite Rolling Stones song on stage, but we really bonded over a shared passion for sustainability and environmentalism. His work at Planet Positive has already made a significant difference, helping us to reverse the damage we’ve done to the planet we inhabit, and I know we’re all determined to continue his work.”

One of Peter’s favorite quotes, according to his friends, was: “When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bounds. Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be.” – Pantanjali.

“Peter will be missed by hundreds, possibly thousands of people,” Rogers said. “He was a beacon of light is in this world, helping those that want to undo the damage we’ve done to our planet succeed, but was also the life of the party and made every room he walked into brighter and more colorful. He was a one of a kind.”

Alexi McCammond became known as a political reporter for Axios, and was expected to have a bright future in journalism as the Editor-in-Chief for Teen Vogue this week – but she had to resign the position before starting as past tweets were discovered and published online.

After readers discovered racist and homophobic content on McCammond’s Twitter account, 20 current members of the magazine’s editorial staff wrote a letter expressing their concern about McCammond.

McCammond resigned the position quickly, without much struggle and released a statement on her Twitter account that says, “I became a journalist to help lift up the stories and voices of our most vulnerable communities. As a young woman of color, that’s part of the reason I was so excited to lead the Teen Vogue team in their next chapter. My past tweets have overshadowed the work I’ve done to highlight the people and issues that I care about — issues that Teen Vogue has worked tirelessly to share with the world — and so Condé Nast and I have decided to part ways.”

The Tweets in question were written around 11 years ago, when Alexi McCammond was still a 17-year-old teenager. According to the Daily Mail, McCammond had written derogatory tweets promoting stereotypes against those of Asian descent. Though these were written a long time ago, critics are considering the rise of hate crime attacks against Asian-Americans and the recent shooting in Atlanta that cost eight lives.

Condé Nast said they were aware of McCammond’s past tweets, which came to light while she was working at Axios. The journalist had apologized numerous times for the content of those tweets.

“Given her previous acknowledgment of these posts and her sincere apologies, in addition to her remarkable work in journalism elevating the voices of marginalized communities, we were looking forward to welcoming her into our community,” said the company’s Chief People Officer, Stan Duncan in an email to staff. “In addition, we were hopeful that Alexi would become part of our team to provide perspective and insight that is underrepresented throughout media.”

However, once the job announcement was made, the company faced almost immediate backlash both online and from their own employees.

This isn’t the first time Condé Nast has had to deal with allegations of racism and offhand employee tweets and comments. However, this may be a turning point in the publisher’s history as they begin to uncover and investigate these claims – and refrain from finding themselves under further scrutiny.

]]>
Though NYC has seen a diverse set of mayors govern the city over the last century, NYC has never elected a woman. Given the current political climate and the scandal with Andrew Cuomo, this may be the year that finally brings us a real change. As the amount of female-led companies and women entrepreneurs increases, some businesses are hoping a female NYC mayor can bring about the changes necessary to save NYC’s economy.

Although primaries aren’t until June and the election isn’t due for another nine months, campaigns have already kicked off for the NYC mayoral race, with 40 individuals filing the necessary paperwork to become contenders. Among those 40, we count at least 12 women, which is a record for New York. You can find a full list of women running here.

In case anyone needs a recap: due to the pandemic, small businesses have suffered all around the country, including in NYC, where communities rely on these businesses for everything from jobs to entertainment. For women, the pandemic has been tougher, with women facing a million more job losses than men according to recent statistics.

Many entrepreneurs are hoping for an equitable way to recover their businesses as well as the economy. Some see a change in leadership as the necessary answer. Not just any leadership, but one that can empathize and bring fresh solutions to the table.

For other female-run businesses, seeing so many women in the running for a mayoral race is simply an inspiration. It is meaningful for everyone to see these glass ceilings shatter.

“I love seeing women running for mayor because any woman in power – or working to be in power – is a positive for other young women and girls. I looked up to women entrepreneurs before I became a founder, and I know others do as well,” stated Lindsey Allard, Co-Founder & CEO of PlaybookUX.

The list of candidates is extensive, and although many businesses would like to see a woman elected as NYC mayor, to most, the right candidate is the one that can address their concerns on reopening, safety, childcare, healthcare, taxes, and actual issues.

Aysha Saeed, of the slow fashion brand for women AYSHA NY said, “I have spoken to some of the female mayoral candidates about the struggles and silver linings of being an entrepreneur in the city during COVID-19, and it is inspiring that we have so many women running. What I noticed is their collaborative spirit when it comes to speaking with entrepreneurs. They want to understand what our challenges are and how they can help. They realize that entrepreneurs are the backbone of NYC’s economy, especially the fashion industry and Garment Center. Our area was hit so hard. Many independent brands were forced to move outside of NYC or some even had to shut down. So many factories and suppliers are struggling too due to lack of orders. While larger big box companies are cutting jobs and scaling back, small business owners continue to create new jobs and, without us, the economy becomes stagnant. From past conversations, it sounds like they want to bring more everyday voices like ours to the table to help create new policies that support us vs big corporations only.”

“I’m super excited about how many women are running for the NYC mayor job and how they can push for more affordable childcare in the city. The average cost of a daycare in NYC is more than $2,200/month (according to real data on our site), and families in the city need more affordable options ASAP. The pandemic has only made the situation worse and many women are unable to go back to work due to a lack of options. We’re hoping to see more subsidized care and more support for smaller home-based daycares that allow families more options,” explained Dana Levin-Robinson, CEO of UpFront daycare services.

Candidates for NYC mayor range from liberal incumbents like Maya Wiley, a professor of urban policy at The New School and a former attorney, to democrat Cleopatra Fitzgerald, to real-housewives star Barbara Kavovit. The women represent different political parties and hold a variety of positions as business owners, politicians, and lawyers. Some campaigns are considered more serious than others, as with any election. What this range of candidates does give us is a fresh look at women politicians. It gives us a range of choices. Each candidate has their own ideas, background, and supporters. Sometimes when we think of women politicians we have a limited view. Though there’s no shortage of them in the United States, there is a certain pressure on female politicians to cater specifically to women’s issues to gather votes. What we’re seeing currently in NYC is a list of female candidates who are so different that it humanizes the idea of women as politicians. With this range of beliefs and agendas, voters can feel like they’re supporting the politician, rather than a gender-binary norm.

According to Blaire Brown, Brand Strategist, at blairebrown.com, “Having an increased amount of women running for office will build up female empowerment initiatives across the board. As a female entrepreneur myself that specializes in helping women business owners with their marketing strategies, I predict that there will be a major increase in women working towards becoming self-employed, and starting their own businesses. Seeing a woman in office, even just running for office, opens up the eyes of women– both young and old –that they too can take risks and follow their dreams. We live in an incredible time that women are unstoppable, and seeing more women running for office reaffirms this.”

Sustainable investing is the act of buying stock and supporting companies that are socially responsible or socially conscious. As millennials and Gen-Z enter the stock market, they are largely looking for companies that won’t ruin the planet or exploit their workers to invest in.

Investing in companies that are using their business and profits to help improve the planet will eventually cause a shift in power from companies that are exploitative and destructive to these newer, greener, initiatives. If you’re looking to get in on the action, here are a few choices of companies that you can invest in that will help you earn a profit while leaving you with a clean conscience.

Clean Energy Stocks & Companies

Falling costs and an uptick in the desire to be sustainable have made renewable energy companies a great place for sustainable investing. Wind and solar companies will eventually be the leaders in this industry, and many investors are looking to get in right now. Hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass companies round out this category. Here are a few companies to invest in right now.

Brookfield Renewable Partners (BEP) – Focusing on renewable energy, Brookfield owns nearly 1000 power generating facilities worldwide, with their portfolio including hydroelectric dams, wind power, and solar power. They’re also well-known for a focus on community engagement, employee well-being, and social responsibility. Their stock is a slow-grower but overall profitable, with increases to come through the next few years as the company plans to continue to buy and create renewable energy facilities.

Vestas Wind Systems A/S (VWDRY) – This Denmark based company develops, manufactures, and installs wind turbine systems. They work with countries around the globe and are soaring in popularity.

First Solar Inc. (FSLR) – They design and manufacture photovoltaic solar power systems and solar modules around the world. As the popularity of solar energy increases, you can expect their stock to keep going up.

Sustainable Food: Beyond Meat (BYND)

Another industry that’s doing incredibly well is sustainable food. The company Beyond Meat (BYND) is popular and profitable to invest in as many eateries and fast food companies are now relying on this product for their increasingly health-conscious or vegetarian customers. A study recently showed that this alternative “meat” company generates less greenhouse gas emissions, uses less energy & resources, and less impact on water and land than traditional beef companies.

Pollution Control: Clean Harbors (CLH)

There are many different businesses that deal with pollution control you can choose to invest in, but Clean Harbors is a top choice as their stocks show growth over time and projections show that this pattern will continue. As other companies struggle with spills, cleanups, and making changes to their own brands, they rely on companies that already know how to do that. Clean Harbors is particularly known for helping to clean up after the Deepwater Horizon explosion and the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill. They continue to provide emergency spill response and hazardous waste management services.

These are just a few of the hundreds of companies you can check out if you’re interested in sustainable investing. Pro tip: always research a company before you invest. Take a look at their CEO and management teams and check the news for any scandals or potential disasters that will lower their stock value in addition to looking at financial projections. Finally, consider when the best time to invest is. There are many companies that seek to do more good than harm – so you can invest and feel good about it.

The post When Is The Best Time To Invest in Stocks? appeared first on Grit Daily News.

]]>
With stocks and commodities, you’re buying, selling, and trading quickly and therefore there are times that it is better to buy and sell. Individuals that make a substantial amount of money from investing in stocks are well-informed and keep track of business trends and economic forecasts. You don’t have to be an expert to invest in stocks, but If you’re not prepared to make moves quickly, consider a long-term investment in a project or company. However, there no actual best time to invest in stocks. If you keep waiting you risk missing out on some potentially profitable moments.

Here’s what you need to know about timing your investments.

Which Quarter is Best to Invest in Stock?

When it comes to investing in the U.S., there are some seasonal changes. You can expect the January Effect in the beginning of the year. This means that prices are often pushed up by investors as they return from the holidays. You may want to avoid buying immediately in January, and instead wait a few weeks for prices to stabilize.

Investopedia says, “September is traditionally a down month. The average return in October is positive historically, despite the record drops of 19.7% and 21.5% in 1929 and 1987.” September tends to join the summer months in slower growths, while October is considered the start of the busy winter/holiday season that is generally more profitable. However, this also depends on what kind of market you’re investing in, the year, and what else is going on. This may not ring true every single year, it’s just a trend in the market.

When Should You Buy a Stock?

The stock market goes through natural changes all year, with prices corresponding to important events, seasons, and sometimes even days of the week and times of the day. However, these changes are subtle and small. In the morning, stocks fluctuate and prices can be higher than they are in the afternoon – but only slightly. If you keep waiting for the right moment, you may miss out. Investing is better than not investing at all, according to the experts at Business Insider.

Are IPOs Worth It?

Scouring the internet for clues, opinions among professionals are split when it comes to IPOs. Some investors claim they are too risky, while others tout that investing at the right time can make a lot of money overnight. Always perform your due diligence and do your research on a company and its value and popularity before investing. Trading IPOs is slightly more complicated than regular stocks and if you want to invest in one, you’ll likely have to work with a brokerage company that will be ready to invest for you when the brand goes public, so it’s not a spur-of-the-moment transaction. You should be well informed and prepared before you go in on an IPO.

When is an IPO worth it? You can’t always guess which company will do well when it goes public, but there are some signs of a worthwhile IPO investment you should look for. Firstly, invest in an industry that you understand. This is the key to understanding the trends, which brands are popular, and which companies are innovating in a way that will bring them and you profits. If you don’t get it, this isn’t the industry to invest in for you.

Take a look at the management, board of directors, and execs listed on their website. Make sure the company hasn’t had any bad press or lawsuits. Check that those in charge have experience and a good record, otherwise you risk losing money.

One of the most important factors to consider is why the company is going public. Companies usually go public for one of two reasons – they are either in debt, but popular, and hoping to raise cash to offset their debts and continue, or they are allowing investors in to raise cash to expand, innovate, create a new product, etc. It’s best to invest in a company that has a good track record and is planning to expand. However, there are plenty of companies that have saved themselves and gone on to become profitable after going public to pay off debt.

There’s always some risk involved, there’s no real best time to invest, and how much of a risk you’re willing to take is up to you!

Knowing everything there is to know about investing only comes with experience. However, if you’re new, you’re likely doing as much research as you can about investing basics to try and avoid making mistakes. It’ll be hard to understand information on investing if you don’t have the right vocabulary. Here’s a little glossary of investing basics to help get you started.

Bear Market vs. Bull Market

You’ll hear these two terms a lot when it comes to the stock market. Each one refers to the current trend in the market. When the market increases or goes up aggressively over a period of time, this is known as a bull market. This usually occurs when there is a strong economy and low unemployment levels in the country. Investors see the stock market rising and decide it’s a great time to invest because it’s continually going up. Investments drive the market and the market drives investments – it comes full circle.

bear market is the opposite. This period usually occurs after some economic downturn and higher unemployment. It’s also called a seller’s market because investors often try to sell their stocks at this time before they lose money.

IPO

The first time a private company goes public and begins to sell stock shares, this is known as an Initial Public Offering or IPO. It’s just the process of going from private to public. Companies may do this to raise capital to pay off debts or fund new initiatives, elevate their public face, or give their employees the option of diversifying their holdings or selling portions of their private shares to liquefy.

ICO

ICO stands for Initial Coin Offering. Similar to the IPO process, except that investors receive cryptocurrency instead of stocks. A company must connect to a blockchain and create a plan (known as a white paper) explaining how their cryptocurrency works. Anyone can do this with their company and the market is mostly unregulated for now. This also makes ICOs a little riskier.

Cryptocurrency

virtual or digital currency that is not issued by a central authority, like a bank or government, and is instead issued by a company. This currency can be traded specifically for services from that company or other places where cryptocurrency is accepted. There are over 6,700 different types of cryptocurrencies at this article’s writing, and you can expect that there will be even more in the next few years.

Stocks & Shares

Stock or equity is a share of a company. As the company makes money, your share will grow as well. When you buy a stock, it’s like you’re investing in the company. The amount of shares you buy tells you how much of the company you “own.”

Stock Ticker

This is a handy method of keeping track of stocks, similar to a clock – thus, the name, ticker. A “tick” is any change in the price of the stock/share/security. A company’s ticker symbol is the shortened symbol used to denote a specific company on a specific market, such as the New York Stock Exchange. The symbol is made up of a couple of letters or numbers. Apple, for example, trades on the NASDAQ and uses the ticker symbol: NASDAQ: AAPL in trading.

Averaging Down

Averaging down is an investment strategy many company owners and employees practice. When a stock price goes down, a stock owner may purchase additional shares at the new, lower price, thus lowering the amount they pay for these stocks.

Broker

An individual person or a firm that places investments and advises on security exchanges on behalf of an investor. A broker acts as an intermediary

Day Trading

When you buy and sell over the course of a day, or if you do this multiple times throughout the day, this is known as day trading

Pink Sheet

This term refers to a listing service for companies that aren’t listed on a major stock exchange, like the NYSE. A pink sheet is usually synonymous with penny stocks

Dividend

A stock dividend is when a company distributes some of its earnings to a group or class of shareholders, often determined by a board of directors. It’s often used as a reward system for investors for putting money into the business.

Portfolio

Your portfolio is a rundown of financial investments, including stocks, commodities, cash, and other cash equivalents.

Sector

A sector can be thought of as an overall industry – a collection of businesses that share operating characteristics.

Volatility

Simply put, volatility is the range of price changes that any stock or security will go through over a given period of time. For example, a highly volatile stock is one that rapidly changes and goes through highs and lows quickly. Understanding a company’s volatility is a part of understanding investing basics.

Liu Jin, a Meituan driver, set himself on fire on Monday after he was denied his weekly wages. He is currently in critical condition, with 80 percent of his body suffering third-degree burns.

The video of the incident, which is below, has gone viral.

https://youtu.be/vcY4IWpaQsk

The video shows several people nearby rush over to Mr. Jin as he set himself on fire atop his motorized bicycle to extinguish the flames. Chinese authorities have not officially confirmed that this was due to a labor dispute, but several sources report that Jin can be heard saying “I want my blood and sweat money back,” to the individuals that came to his aid.

He was taken to the hospital where he is recovering, according to one of his daughters. Jin is the sole breadwinner in his family. They are now raising funds for his treatment through a popular Chinese crowdfunding website.

Ele.me, which is the food delivery platform for Alibaba, said in a statement, “We are saddened by the tragic event. The situation is currently under investigation and we are unable to comment at this stage.” The company is owned by Chinese billionaire Jack Ma, who was reported missing earlier this month after criticizing the Chinese government, though many speculate that he could simply be lying low.

What’s Happening With Essential Workers in China?

Many have begun to raise the complaint that, although they were “appreciated” for doing the bulk of the work and delivering food during China’s pandemic shutdown, drivers are seeing lower and lower wages. Drivers were often cheered on as heroes amid the COVID-19 pandemic, where they played a pivotal role in delivering food to people on lockdown, but reported that their wages and working conditions had faltered during that time.

Mr. Liu was working for Ele.me, one of China’s biggest food service delivery platforms. He recently decided to quit and work for Meituan, another platform. As he was switching, Liu had a dispute over payment with someone in charge at Ele.me. After being denied wages, he set himself on fire in protest.

Last month, a 43-year-old Alibaba driver with the last name Han collapsed and died while delivering food. While his family was compensated by Ele.me, the original amount was CNY 2,000 ($309), but after public backlash, they increased that to CNY 600,000 ($92, 762).

With the pandemic hitting China, there are more people out of work and therefore available to become drivers. With an endless supply of drivers and increased demand for products, these companies are able to increase the workload for their drivers but decrease their pay, maximizing their own profitability. In some cases, blogging and documenting labor disputes has helped some workers receive better compensation.

It has been a rocky week for Elon Musk. Last week, Forbes announced him as the richest man in the world. On Monday, Tesla shares fell by nearly eight percent, dropping Musk to the second position on that list, after Jeff Bezos.

Musk is worth $153.5 billion as of today, after losing almost 14 billion on Monday.

According to Business Insider, “Tesla shares fell by nearly 8% on Monday, their largest one-day fall since late September. Based on Forbes’ estimates, this pushed his total wealth down to $176.2 billion, compared with Bezos’ $182.1 billion fortune.”

Musk’s reaction was pretty relaxed. “How strange,” he tweeted, adding, “Well, back to work …”

How Did Musk Become the Richest in the World?

Although Musk takes only a small salary from his companies, he does have a 20 percent stake in Tesla, a 48 percent stake in SpaceX, and 57 million vested Tesla stock options, which is what made him the richest man in the world. One of the reasons Musk was able to become so rich is a little-known clause that awards Musk with stock options when Tesla reaches a certain goal, and Tesla had a fantastic 2020. Thus, Elon Musk became the highest-paid executive in 2020. And for a brief moment he overtook Jeff Bezos number one spot.

Who’s the Richest Now?

Jeff Bezos is still holding is number one spot, with his net worth totaling $182 billion according to NPR.

Bill Gates and Bernard Arnault take up spaces three and four on that list. However, these differences are really quite small when you consider that many of them depend on stock options rather than salaries. Billionaires switching places on the “who’s richest” list actually happens often enough. Though Jeff Bezos is atop the list for the second year in a row, Musk is in the running to beat him out again. Similarly, Gates and Arnault take turns being “worth” more.
